Top 5 Tips for Restoring Tooth Enamel
Although most of us were raised to do things like brush our teeth after every meal and visit our dentist for an annual teeth cleaning, the reality is that as many of us got older, we also got a bit more negligent when it came to maintaining proper oral care. We started drinking lots of sodas. Our diets began to consist of loads of sugar and starch. We began taking all kinds of medications. And over time, these were some of the things that started to strip away the thin layer of covering on our tooth that is known as our enamel.
And sure, you may have seen commercials before that have told you that there is no way that you can ever get enamel back once it is lost but that’s not altogether true. Actually, there are a few things that can be done in order to help restore tooth enamel. If you’d like a few tips on how to do that, check these suggestions out below:
Use fluoride. One of the best things that you can do in order to restore your teeth’s enamel is to use fluoride. The reason why is that fluoride, overtime, strengthens your teeth, fights cavities and also helps to prevent tooth enamel erosion. So, try and use a toothpaste that has fluoride in it and also consider trying a mouthwash that has fluoride in it too.
Eat right. Something else that can cause damage to tooth enamel is eating a lot of sweets. But did you know that you can help to fortify your teeth with the kinds of foods that you eat? Milk, yogurt, salmon, strawberries and yes, water, are all things that can help to keep your teeth healthy and strong.
Water. Speaking of water, there’s another reason why you should drink at least 6-8 glasses of it every day. One of the benefits of having salvia in your mouth is that it helps to keep it moist and remove the bacteria that likes to attach to your enamel. By drinking water, this prevents dry mouth from occurring and also helps to restore the enamel on your teeth.
Do some bonding or get a crown. When the enamel on one or more of your teeth is extremely damaged, something that your dentist may recommend is that you have your teeth bonded or that you get some crowns. Bonding consists of attaching a composite resin that is the color of your tooth to it in order to fill in the area that is damaged. A crown, which is also referred to as a cap, can be placed on top of the tooth as a way to prevent further erosion from taking place.
Protect the enamel. If you were to consult with a dental company such as Eastside Smiles about what you can do to restore your enamel, one thing that they would probably recommend is that you take certain measures to prevent further damage. Some of those things include sipping soda and juice through a straw, eating acidic food in moderation and chewing gum that is sugar free. However, if you want more tips on how to take better care of your enamel, be sure to make an appointment with your dentist. The more proactive you are about your teeth, the better off both you and them will be!
