The root canal is the hollow area at the center of a tooth. In dentistry, a pulpectomy is an endodontic treatment to cure an infection of the root canal; informally a root canal.

At the center of a tooth is a hollow area that houses soft tissue, known as pulp. This hollow area comprises of a relatively wide space towards the chewing surface of the tooth called the pulp chamber. This pulp chamber is connected to the tip of the root of the tooth via thin hollow pipe-like canals - hence, the term "root canal". These canals run through the centre of the roots like pencil lead runs through the length of a pencil. The tooth receives nutrition through the blood vessels and nerves traversing these canals. Occasionally, a cavity on the outside of the tooth may allow this soft tissue to become infected. If left untreated a serious jaw infection can result. The infection and inflammation is very painful in most cases. Ideally treatment should take place before this happens.

To cure the infection and save the tooth, it is necessary for the dentist to cut into the pulp chamber, and remove the infected pulp by scraping it out of the root canals. Once that is done, the dentist fills the cavity with an inert material, usually Gutta-percha, and seals up the opening. This procedure is known as root canal therapy. If enough of the tooth is damaged by the disease or removed as a result of the treatment, a crown may be required.

Lower right first molar (center) after root canal therapy and crownRoot canal therapy is one of the most feared procedures in all of dentistry; contrary to popular belief, however, root canal treatment is usually painless due to effective pain control techniques used by the dentist while the treatment is being performed and the (optional) use of pain control medication after treatment.

Root canal (endodontic) treatment treats the soft inside tissue of the tooth known as pulp.A temporary filling is placed until your dentist can place a crown on the tooth to prevent breakage and to restore it to full function. good info by 101dentist...If you have a tooth whose internal structures are spoiled, you may advantage from root canal therapy. Also called endodontics, root canal therapy can bring back your tooth to its state of health by treating the damaged part of your tooth...

A local anesthetic will be given.  A sheet of latex called the "rubber dam" (we've got nonlatex ones too) will be placed around the tooth to isolate it, hence keeping it clean and dry during treatment.  The treatment consists of three or four basic steps, but the number of visits will depend on your particular case.
Occasionally a tooth that has undergone endodontic, treatment fails to heal or pain continues despite therapy. Although rare, sometimes a tooth initially responds to root canal therapy but becomes painful or diseased months or years later. When either of these situations occur, the tooth often can be maintained with a second endodontic treatment.

Don't worry about dental operations because there is sedation. This is for people who fear dental treatments.

This procedure involves accessing the interior chamber of the tooth. (nerve chamber) Once in the interior of the tooth, the nerve chamber is cleaned, shaped and irrigated before being filled. The filling seals the inside of the tooth and signifies the end of the living tissue residing in the treated tooth.

Hi, once I have discussed common term for root canal therapy, also the interior space of the tooth root. Some step process required when the inner pulp of the tooth is irreversibly damaged. Step one involves removing all of the inner pulp from the chamber of the tooth. Step two involves cleaning and smoothing the inside of the tooth. Step three involves filling the tooth with an inert material. Thanks!

A root canal is the space within the root of a tooth. It is part of a naturally occurring space within a tooth that consists of the pulp chamber (within the coronal part of the tooth), the main canal(s), and more intricate anatomical branches that may connect the root canals to each other or to the surface of the root. In dentistry Root Canal is a dental procedure to fix a tooth by removing the pulp chamber of the tooth and filling it with a suitable filling material. A root canal is usually performed when the tooth cannot be filled or restored any other way because the decay has reached the nerve of the tooth or the tooth has become infected.

Root Canal, or endodontics, is the process of removing the nerves from the roots of a tooth.  A root canal is often necessary to save an infected tooth.  If an infected tooth is left alone for a long period of time, an abscess can form.  An abscess will show up on an x-ray as a dark spot below the apex of the root.  This is actually bone loss in the jaw.  It is very important to catch this problem before it deteriorates too far.

Root canal treatment is needed for two main reasons. The first is infection. sSecond reason for a root canal is damage to the pulp that can't be fixed. The decay reaches tooth enamel and porous layer of the tooth that protects the nerve. When this layer is exposed it can cause tooth sensitivity. When the inside of the mouth gets hurt or irritated, bacteria may enter and cause an infection this is mainly called abscess. In this case root canal is important if you dont want to remove the teeth. If root canal treatment is not done, an infected tooth may have to be extracted. It is better to keep your natural teeth if you can.

Inside each tooth is a pulp chamber that contains the nerves and blood supply for the tooth. When the pulp becomes infected due to decay or injury to the tooth, the pulp must be removed from the center of the tooth and the canals of each root. Once the infected pulp is removed, the remaining chamber is filled with a rubber-based material to seal it off.
Root canal therapy is an excellent way to save a tooth that would otherwise die and need to be removed.
