I'm thinking of buying dental insurance. I don't know too much about dental insurance. I've heard of dental insurance and also dental plans. Can somebody tell me what the differences are between them? Thanks!

Dental insurance is just like any insurance, you pay monthly, choose a provider and insurance will pay part or all of your expenses at the dentist.  It usually has co-pays, deductibles and yearly caps associated with it.  Generally speaking it will give you two times of free cleanings a year and then pay part of whatever proceedures you have done and you're responsible for the remainder.

Dental plans are typically discount plans and they're more lenient.  They cost less per month, give discounts on all fees the dentist would charge and then the patient pays cash and is done.  No co-pays, deductibles or caps on how much you can use it.  Typically you can change dentists and they start immediately rather than having to wait.  No contracts either.  Some insurances and discount plans can be used together if the provider accepts both.  Many people save largely by first billing the insurance and then applying the discount to what is still owed.  Here's an example for the purposes of additional research:  http://www.mybenefitsplus.com/amysun

Alot of companies do not offer dental insurance, and if they do, it's not all that.  Have you considered discount programs?  View http://www.ChoiceBenefitsNow.com to review the programs.  This program is accepted in most states.  You can look up providers in your area also.

Thanks and best of luck to everyone.
