June 2005 had RCT started on 2 teeth, upper left bicuspid and the molar next to it. Bicuspid had broken, but the molar had never given me any problems. On antibiotics for 2 days before treatment began. I was told I would be sore for a couple of days, but pain never got any better and I called a week later to inquire. I was then told it could last several weeks. Back a week and a half later to have RCT finished. Shot me up 3 times with novacaine. As he was placing the rubber dams I stopped him as the pain was intense. Shot me up a few more times. There was still pain but it was bearable. Continued on antibiotics (Amoxicillin)and pain meds (Vicodan). I only took a couple of pain pills cuz I don't like them. Face slightly swollen that night, thought it was a normal reaction to the trauma. Next day face still swollen. The day after that (Friday) very swollen and stopped at dentist's office on way to work and told them I really needed to see dentist. He looked at me and said, "Oh, my!" Put me on another antibiotic to take in conjunction with the one I was already taking. Told me to stop by on Monday to check me out. The next day (Saturday) face was swollen all the way up to my eye and when I bent over to pick something up off the floor all this rusty-clored fluid poured out of my nose. I went back on Monday and he put me on an oral steriod. I went back to him every week for the next 2 months complaining of pain and dizziness and light-headedness. He always said that the x-rays looked fine and that he needed to put crowns on the teeth. I was reluctant due to the problems I was having. Finally set up an appointment for Sept. to have crowns put on.
I ultimately had to cancel that appointment because I went to a medical doctor to see if he could figure out what was wrong with me. As I stated above, I still had a lot of pain, dizziness, -lightheadedness, but now I was also experiencing a burning sensation behind my left eye, the pain and tingling would radiate up and around my head, I had discomfort in my neck and into my shoulder, loss of concentration, loss of motor skills, confusion, anxiety attacks while driving because I almost passed out behind the wheel one day. He ordered blood tests and a CT of my sinuses - both came back negative. He then sent me to an ENT. ENT said sinuses were fine and to go back to dentist. A couple of weeks later I did go back to the dentist, but I really didn't want to because I had lost trust in him. Once again he told me that the x-rays looked fine and he wanted to put the crowns on as I was "compromising the integrity of the teeth." I freaked out on him a little and told him that I did not want to spend $1400 for crowns when there was a possibility that the teeth may need to be pulled and I knew there was something wrong. At that point, he finally referred me to an Endo. It only took him 4 months to refer me!
I went to the Endo that same day. He took his own x-rays and after studying the pictue for 10 seconds told me that the dentist had missed a canal. He put me on antibiotics for 7 days. I then went bak to the Endo to have the RCT redone. As soon as he started drilling I smelled a putrid smell and he started taking pictures of the inside of my tooth. When he was done, he told me that there was infection inside the tooth. I asked him if it got there because of the missed canal and he told me no. The burning sensation behind my eye was immediately gone, but the rest of the symptoms persisted but not in the same degree. We set up an appointment for 2 weeks to have the RCT finished. When I went to that appointment I told him that I had uncontrollable twitching in my lower left eyelid. He told me that I would have to see a neurologist to address that issue.
A month later I went to my GP complaining about the neck and shoulder discomfort thinking that it might be heart related because it would radiate down my left arm. She told me it sounded like a pinched nerve and sent my for x-rays where it did show the possibility. She referred me to a chiropractor. After months of seeing him, I was still no better. He knew about the root canal and the problems that I was going through and helped try to pinpoint the problem. I told him the what I was experiencing wasn't coming from my back or my neck, but that the discomfort got worse if the pain and tingling in my face got worse. I also saw a neurologist during this time who looked at me like I was crazy when I mentioned the root canal saga and the problems asscoiated with it. He ordered and MRI of my neck and CT of me head. I also went back to the Endo a couple of weeks ago still complaining of many of the same symptoms and he referred me to an oral surgeon. The oral surgeon said that it sounded like neuralgia and that it wasn't his area and to go back to the neurologist.
After nine months, this is where I stand. No one seems to be able to tell me anything and it's very frustrating. I am scared. I can't sleep and when I do fall asleep I wake up after about 15 minutes and have trouble falling back to sleep again. I think it may also be something systemic because I feel worn out and tired all the time, my left elbow feels like it has tendonitis in it, I have began experiencing digestive problems, and I have an itchy rash. I have anxiety attacks when driving and it feels like I can't take a deep breath. I don't feel like doing things anymore. My boyfriend gets a little frustrated with me because I have lost my desire to have sex. I all of the sudden cry for no reason.
Sorry this was so long, but there was a lot going on. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Or if you know of a doctor who won't look at me like I am crazy, that would be apprciated, too. I am 40 and live in Cecil County, Maryland.
Thank you,
Sherry
