Hi,

I've read that receding gums might be caused by over brushing, or possibly by not brushing enough...

It's confusing, but I also have recently (in the last week) started to feel a sensitivity in the root of one of my incisors and, looking at the tooth, I think it's because the gum has recessed considerably.

What can I do to identify what I'm doing to cause the recession, and how would I go about fixing it?

Thanks,
~Worried.

It maybe over brushing and scarring your gum line and it could be a certain disease. The best answer for that is go to your dentist.

Healthy gums are pink, stippled, and tough and have a limited sensibility to pain, temperature, and pressure. The gums are separated from the alveolar mucosa, which is red, by a scalloped line that approximately follows the contours of the teeth. The edges of the gums around the teeth are free and extend as small wedges into the spaces between the teeth (interdental papillae). Internally, fibres of the periodontal membrane enter the gum and hold it tightly against the teeth. Changes in colour, loss of stippling, or abnormal sensitivity are early signs of gum inflammation, or gingivitis.

You might be brushing too hard. Inadequate brushing or flossing allows bacteria to build up between the teeth, resulting in enzymes eating the bone away from the teeth.
