Oral Conscious Sedation Dentistry

by Marshall Fields

Do you dread going to the dentist? Do you have a sensitive gag reflex that makes going to the dentist a nightmare? Have you put off getting dental work done because the procedures would be too long and painful? If so, then oral conscious sedation dentistry may be a good option for you.

How Does it work?

Oral conscious sedation dentistry, also known as "sedation dentistry," is the use of oral medications to relax a patient during dental office procedures. Although there are various states of relaxation induced by medicine in oral conscious sedation dentistry, this technique is different from general anesthesia because patients are not unconscious. These medications make you drowsy and are taken usually about an hour before the patient's dental office procedure. Usually small doses of these medications are given in order to give the patient minimal sedation, where they remain conscious but somewhat groggy and relaxed. However, sometimes patients are given a larger dose, which allows them to have moderate sedation. During moderate sedation patients can respond to the dentist but usually remember little if any of the procedure that they undergo. Along with the oral medications, patients are also given numbing local anesthesia, in order to numb the pain from the dental work.

Who Uses Oral Conscious Sedation Dentistry?

Most dentists have the ability to give pills in order to relax during a procedure, but very few dentists are certified by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) program in sedation dentistry. If you feel you need to explore sedation dentistry, make sure you find dentists in your area who have the expertise and certifications to provide you with the best care.
